Jack was a mean drunkard who sold his soul to the evil for a drink a 31st night of October. He cheated the evil twice and got rid of his spell.
When Jack died, he couldn’t come in the heaven because of sinful life. The evil couldn’t keep his soul and he had to return throw a very dark path and the evil gave him a lit charcoal and Jack put it into a hollow pumpkin. We celebrate this tradition since then.

An old Irish folk tale tells of Stingy Jack, a lazy yet shrewd farmer who uses a cross to trap the Devil. There are a lot of stories, but in all of them Jack only lets the Devil go when he agrees never to take his soul. After a while Jack died, as all living things do. Of course, his life had been too sinful to go to paradise, but the Devil had promised him not to take his soul, so he had forbiden go to the hell too. Jack now had nowhere to go. He asked how he would see where to go, as he hadn't light, and the Devil mockingly tossed him an ember that would never burn out from the flames of hell. Jack carved out one of his turnips (which were his favorite food), put the ember inside it, and began endlessly wandering the Earth for a resting place. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern", or Jack-o'-lantern.
Americans use a carved pumpkin instead of a large turnip.
