Excitement in Brazil over World Cup stickers

12 May 2014
In Brazil completing the World Cup sticker album has become a popular past-time ahead of the first match in Sao Paulo on 12 June.
It takes 640 stickers to complete the album and Brazilians of all ages have been swapping with other collectors to achieve their goal.

The run-up to a World Cup is a time when children start collecting football stickers and cards. But there are also adults who get worryingly misty-eyed, including Ian Shoesmith.
I rip the packets of stickers open with all the excitement and anticipation of the 10-year-old boy that I used to be, and inhale their long-forgotten but oh-so-familiar odour of glue mixed with sticky tape and paper.
Instantly, I'm back in 1986 and my penultimate year at primary school, when the most important thing in my life was how an England squad featuring Gary Lineker, Peter Shilton and John Barnes would fare at the World Cup.
I am a 38-year-old father with a mortgage and a four-year-old son, Danny.
But my childhood passion - the thrill of racing to the paper shop, handing over all of my pocket money, desperate to be greeted by the mulleted head of a Soviet-bloc defender - is dismissed, out-of-hand, by my son. But I will persist in collecting them - for when he changes his mind. I'm most definitely not collecting them for myself. Definitely not.

Can you write 200 words about something that you have collected and how it was?

  1. When it was small I was charmed with playing football and I liked everything recionado with the football, because of it when there came the moment to choose something that to collect, I it had clergy, I praised myself for the prints of football. I was charmed with the prints of the league from the beginning and I started collecting. The first season that I collected almost I completed the album and in later seasons I completed several times the album with all the stuck prints. What more I liked was to play with my friends of the college in the class or in the court, which we were doing was a game that was consisting of playing the letters at seeing the one who was throwing and falling mouth it arrives, if it was falling mouth below and that of your rival mouth arrives your you were losing, if it was falling mouth it arrives and that of your rival mouth below your you were winning, if they were working out equal it was repeating itself until it was working out different. And this is the collecting that I have done during a lot of years and some of them I finished

  2. I think everybody in their childhood have collected something with their friends. I remember that activity as the most exciting thing that we used to do in our free time or in the school.
I have collected lots of things, but I remember I used to collect stickers. My mum used to buy them in a Chinese shop near my house and I used to have an album where I stuck them. I used to make competitions with my friend to see who had more stickers.
I had all types of stickers, about princess, animals, clothes… Some of them were bright and big and some of them were soft. I used to have all type of textures.
I remember that I used to change stickers with my friends, for example when I had one repeated and I found one that was really cool, I changed it with my friend.
I used to have like three stickers albums, and I’m still having them, but now I don’t use them.
I also used to collect chromes, I used to keep them in a little box and change them with my friends too. I remember there was a game with chromes, and the person who won could keep all the chromes he wanted.

  3. When I was a boy I used to collect small cars. I had about 100 small cars and they were all colours and different marks as well.
Every time my father went on a trip, he used to give me one little car. Furthermore, if I received some money, I would save it to buy another one. I had all kinds of cars. I remember I liked a little red car which was very beatiful, it was something very similar at a Porsche, but I can not remember if it was a Porsche or not. I used to have it in my pocket, all the day, everyday and I played with it when I could. For example, if I was at school, I use to touch it inside my pocket, and so, I knew it was there with me. The free time between classes I played with it. But I didn’t want to play with it in the playground because I was afraid of getting it stolen. It was my favourite car and my favourite toy.
I kept them in a big box under my bed. They were all in the same box, but I could find any of them very easily. When I went to spend a few days away from home, I used to take a few of them with me.
Nowadays, I don’t collect anything. But I don’t know where my cars are.

  4. I understand how the protagonist of this story feels, the emotion you feel when you open an envelope and you get a sticker that you dont´ have. My childhood album was an album of pokemon. On Sunday my parents used to give me an euro, with the coin I used to buy four envelopes. When I had opened it, I used to paste the sticker in the álbum. I used to exchange the repeated ones with my classmates. After a few months I surrended, there were stikers that I never found.

  5. Some time ago I collected my grandfather's guitar. It is a tool that I like to play, it's relaxing and nice to hear the sound you want to hear. One day, 8-9 years ago, my grandmother decided to give it to me for my birthday, it was the best gift I have to do in my life. It came in an unexpected way as it came by mail as if I had sent the him, I took very excited and eager to learn what he played. My grandfather left a score with many songs they liked on it, and are you also learned to play. Today will be very proud of me touching their songs, written by and taken with the guitar.
It's a nice, flamenco guitar, with art, and with a very nice sound, and even, I think it will be one of the few remaining old guitars with this wonderful sound.
At the same time, is a guitar clear, mean measure, and with six strings.
Today , I have not stopped touching any day when the lame, the best time of the day, it's a relief . Although you do not have much time, if you want something , you can.

When I was a child I didn´t collect a lot of things because I prefered play to games with more action. But some things that I collected were…
I collected the pokemon kraks when I was a child. Pokemon was very popular when I was younger and I liked it very much. Before everybody had this game and all played with it.
The games were normally throwing a krak to another krak and I tried to turn over her krak. If you won the game you would get her krak.
Other thing that I had collected was the trading cards Yu-Gi-Oh!. The game of this cards was that one person fought with other person. Each person had his cards and they put it in a table. Each cards had a personal characteristic and won the game the person that eliminated the other person.
I didn´t collect the footballers cards because I never liked the football but my friends collected them.

  7. Last time I collected something was when I as 12 13 years old. I was fascinated with a serie which had a lot of success around the world. Every girl dreamed about become a girl of this serie. There were only perfect guys and pretty girls. I am sure you know that I am talking about, "Rebels". It was a serie made in Mexico and Puerto Rico and told the story of a group of teenagers who lived in a boarding school.
After I had seen this serie for three times, we discovered this collection of images and photos. My sister and I were always buying the big packages which contained seven or eight photos. One day, when we were staying at my aunt´s house, we decided to buy twenty packages. the news-stander decided to award us with six packages, and we did not have to pay them! I think she did it because we were as her vip-costumers. When we open that packages we realized we had all the collection and we did not have to swapp them with anybody. That was a good way to start and finish a collection.

I remember one day in late August, Sunday, we went to the pool and my parents bought the paper, within the album came as a gift from the Spanish football league and a sheet with five stickers gift, liked it so much and made me much hope that from now Dedici collect the cards and fill the entire album.
It was the year he died Antonio Puerta, the Sevilla player, that was all very sad and I remember every day after school to buy stickers at the kiosk outside my school. As many had repeated the change in school with my friends and colleagues, but there was one thing I could not get and was the chrome Sevilla player. I remember that there were people who paid a lot of money on a single die and I never left me, he bought for more stickers.
One afternoon my mother had to attend a funeral mass of a friend's father, and the funeral was held far from my neighborhood and my mother bought me several packs of cards and in one of those packages I came out the player who both sought , was wonderful, incredible, yet I have this album.
